WHAT IS MĀNUKA HONEY?

Mānuka honey comes from the nectar of the flower of the Mānuka bush (Leptospermum scoparium) which is native to New Zealand. It is the combination of the nectar from Mānuka flower and our bees that give this honey its unique properties. 

 In New Zealand's pure environment, the clever honeybee transforms the nectar from the native Mānuka tree (a historically respected medicinal plant, traditionally used as a remedy) into the rare and remarkable Mānuka honey.

Mānuka grows in the farthest reaches and isolated parts of New Zealand and can be difficult to access. Hardy and resilient, Mānuka can also be difficult to grow. Mānuka honey can only be made over a short time frame (around six weeks a year) when the plant is in flower. The amount of honey produced can vary greatly depending on weather conditions and how much nectar is produced. You need dry, warm, summer conditions with moisture in the ground and balmy nights for the nectar of the flowers to start flowing.

Mānuka honey is the also the first honey to be extensively researched and recognized for its impressive natural qualities. After years of research, scientists discovered the 'magic mānuka ingredient' called methylglyoxal (MGO).

WHAT'S THE MGO RATING?

In 2008, following the groundbreaking discovery of the MGO compound, Mānuka Health led the testing and grading of Mānuka honey based on its natural MGO content. We found that MGO forms in the honey from the mānuka flower nectar, which means the levels of the compound can vary greatly and testing every batch is important in order to accurately grade the quality of the honey. 

MGO testing is now recognized as a precise, reliable, and scientifically-verified method for grading Mānuka honey, and it's the most crucial part of Mānuka Health's process. Now, every jar of our honey is tested and certified for its MGO content, which is indicated by the number found on every one of our jars. Understanding the rating is simple: the higher the number, the higher the MGO content, and the higher the grade of honey.

At Mānuka Health, we chose to use the MGO rating, because we believe it is a transparent and precise method of measurement.
